Berry picking is a summer treat most of us look forward to each year.

There are dozens of farms lining the Pacific coastline in California, filled with sun kissed berries to pick off the vine. All you need to do is choose your farm, pack a picnic and some sunscreen and get your friends together for a day trip down the coast to pick some fresh, ad in-season berries.

We rounded up our favorite go-to farms near San Francisco that will have your buckets filled with delicious berries and your mind wondering about what types of treats to bake up with your stash.

Swanton Berry Farm – 57 miles, over 1 hour from SF

Swanton Berry Farm is famous for their sustainable, flavorful strawberries. In addition to these treasures, they offer all sort of berries that include olallieberries, blackberries, tayberries, and loganberries depending on the season. Located in Davenport on the scenic Highway 1, it’s the perfect place to spend a Saturday on the coast picking berries.

Pease Ranch – 58 miles, over 1 hour from SF

If you love cherries, then Pease Ranch is for you! This u-pick berry farm in Brentwood is filled with all kinds of berries including cherries, blackberries, loganberries, boysenberries and olallieberries. The farm has a large shaded picnic area where you can see chickens and tortoises roaming the grounds, making it a fun family destination.

Crystal Bay Farm – 87 miles, 1.5 hours from SF

Located near the Monterey Bay, this family-run farm grows a variety of berries ranging from red and yellow raspberries to strawberries and olallieberries. The farm is just around the corner from Sunset State Beach, making it an ideal location to spend the day laying on the beach munching away at freshly picked berries.

Gizdich Ranch – 104 miles, 2 hours from SF

This family friendly ranch in Watsonville has strawberries, olallieberries, raspberries, and blackberries. You’ll need to bring your own container to pick berries, so be sure to pack a bucket for each family member! No stop at Gizdich Ranch is complete without a visit to the bake shop for seasonal summer pies, berry popsicles and even sandwiches for those looking to lunch at the indoor or outdoor picnic tables.
