MEET NUNUNU, THE ALTERNATIVE FASHION LINE THAT ENCOURAGES PERSONAL STYLE AND EXPRESSION FOR KIDS
Q&A with Nununu Founders, Iris Adler and Tali Milchberg
We’d love to hear more about Nununu’s founding story. Iris and Tali, can you expand on how the two of you met and the inspiration behind your brand?
We met about 10 years ago through a mutual friend. We were both at a point in life that we knew it was time for a change (Iris was a fashion stylist and Tali was an art director at an adv. Firm). We weren’t exactly sure what we wanted to do, but both of us knew that it would be something in children’s wear.
For almost one year we mainly talked, developed our concept and went through a process until we understood that we wanted to create clothes that had a certain concept that communicated with our philosophy of minimalist, comfortable and unisex clothing for children. We had no experience and just started to learn everything – from production to choosing material, from exporting to presenting at shows.
What inspires the colors and patterns used for your various collections?
We think that the main value for Nununu is the fact that we create clothes that are for every child to wear, our clothes are meant to be unisex, giving each child the freedom to choose who they want to be and how they want to look.
Our aim was to create extremely comfortable clothes that we would like to wear as well. We have a distinctive look, our color pallet is very basic in blacks, greys, whites and a touch of color in every collection as well as our graphics which are inspired by very clean minimalist inspirations. We give most of our clothes a deconstructed, worn look that is handmade and we add an extra something with our signature scent that has become a bit of a trademark.
How do you get feedback on your brand designs? Are children apart of the ideation process?
Definitely. Our kids, the whole team’s children, our friends' kids – are the best judges and critics you can find! We get the best feedback from them! Since we are so dedicated in creating, not just edgy clothing but also comfortable ones – we take their advice very seriously and adapt to it. Our photoshoots are the best “auditions” for the clothing – This is when we see the clothing “at work” and if any of the kids complain or we see them in any way uncomfortable – we know that there is an issue with the style and either try to fix it or cut it from the collection.
You’ve amassed a huge following since launch, particularly with a number of celebrities. Was this developed organically? Or do you actively partner/gift celebrities with items?
This is a huge compliment for us. When Nununu started out, one of the first stores that carried the brand was Ron Robinson in LA, and this was our “introduction” to many celebrities who saw the clothes and, we believe, were touched by our different and distinctive DNA and approach and have been “NUNUNUers” ever since.
What are some of your biggest hits or top sellers?
We would have to say that our baggy pants are an all time favorite – their design is very simple and yet has a twist. They have a low drop which makes running all over the place easy and fun and are super comfortable! Our T’s our well loved as they are very soft and feather light.
Are there any new exciting collections or collaborations coming up that you can share?
Always! We are always working on something new… but we will keep it as a surprise for you!
