Contemporary Coastal Style Bedroom

Coastal style has remained a popular decorstaple, and it’s not just limited to beachomes anymore. When done correctly, coastal style can capture a bright and breezy environment that transports you straight to the beach, no matter where you call home.

When thinking about beachy decor, most people think of nautical decor including bold stripes, weathered wood, and a classic red, white, and blue palette. However, we’re here to tell you that nautical is out, and coastal is very much in.

To decorate with a beachy-vibe you don’t have to buy everything that has a seashell on it. Instead, focus on drawing inspiration from elements that you love about the ocean, whether it’s white sandy beaches, hazey bluffs or the pure white of sea foam. You’ll want to pull these oceanic elements into your decor through hues and sun-bleached white, natural light, materials, and fabrics.

Artist and textile designer, Martha Oakes, is an expert in coastal inspired home decor. Her textile line made from watercolor-painted patterns is a reflection of landscapes and details found in the nature that surrounds her Northern California home.

Coastal themed decor is perfect for any bedroom because it’s simple and soothing. Whether your backyard is the beach or it’s a thousand miles away, stepping into a coastal bedroom should make you feel as though you’re on vacation. The easiest way to achieve that is with the right color palette.

Start off with a base of neutrals – like sandy tans, off-whites and soft grays – to create an environment that feels inviting. From there, offset your neutral foundation with subdued accent colors that have beachy connotations. We personally love mixing and matching a variety of different blue throw pillows from Martha Oakes together to create a beautiful representation of the various hues of the ocean.

While the right color palette can make you feel closer to the beach, the spirit of the sea is natural, so it’s important to include plenty of natural elements such as wood and bamboo in a beach-inspired bedroom. The balance between blue and white linens and cream and natural tan accessories will allow you to recreate a shoreline feel, indoors.

Don’t forget to add eye-catching artwork to bring your coastal inspired bedroom together. Martha Oakes has many hand painted watercolor prints and wallpaper that will remind you of the ocean or sitting on the beach and watching the sunset.

Coastal decor is the epitome of simplicity and beauty. The details that go into a coastal bedroom create a haven from your hectic day-to-day schedule, and after all, everyone deserves a break after a long day.
